Background: The establishment of Worcester State Hospital was originally founded in 1833 making it one of the oldest institutions of its kind. In 1877 the old hospital was considered inadequate and a new massive stone version of the popular Kirkbride design was constructed. In 1991 a fire tore through the structure heavily damaging it and the majority of it was torn down however a few wards, the clock tower, and a few other buildings remained which are featured in photo gallery above. Despite the fire to this day the hospital remains active but in newer more modern buildings off to the side of the old stone Kirkbride. However, as of 2008 only the clock tower remains as a reminder of the hospital's past.
